Warts
By Dr. Brown
Warts are a common problem and can often be taken care of with over the counter medications. This is not intended to help diagnose your child but rather for treatment after the diagnosis is made by the doctor. We suggest a salicylic acid product (like Duofilm or ediplast) and Duct tape. These liquid preparations are available non-prescription. Put one drop on the wart and let it air dry (this may be a few seconds). Keep placing drops on until you see a white to gray color. Cover with a small piece of Duct Tape. Do this at least twice daily.
The treatment may take weeks or months. Treatment is done when the area looks smooth and has the same texture after getting out of a bath or shower as the normal skin around it does. If the skin after a bath is still of a different texture, it is likely still there and needs more treatment. If in doubt, call our office during regular hours and we can discuss it. If you are being sloppy with the acid, it will burn the regular skin too. Be careful to use just enough to cover the surface of the wart. If the skin bleeds, stop for a day or two to let it heal.
Please note that we really prefer to treat warts slowly with medicines. Quick fixes like burning off or freezing off can cause problems. Please be patient!
Warts are caused by viruses but are rarely spread to others. Children can go to pools or gym classes as usual.
