A Letter from Dr Brown
January 2026
To My Dear Patients and Families,
I want to share some important news regarding my practice. After much consideration, I have decided to transition to a new practice. This decision was not made lightly, as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my 30+ years at Streeterville Pediatrics.
Beginning April 1st, I will be seeing patients at a new office just a block away with my friends at NWCP - Northwestern Children’s Practice in Chicago. This new location is at the 680 N LSD Building at the corner of Erie and McClurg Streets. (I swear this is not an April fools joke!)
I joined Streeterville Pediatrics in the late 1980’s, straight out of residency from the University of Chicago. As a fresh pediatrician, I began working with my colleague and mentor, Dr Bill Barrows. Bill was such a great physician and taught me so much. I couldn’t have started with a better coach. Together in the 90’s we built a very respectable and thriving practice. Our success enabled us to add a third partner, Dr Kathy Starr in 2001. In addition to being a stand out resident from RUSH, she brought a level of care and compassion that made us all better doctors. Many of you know Dr Starr as an extremely caring, friendly, and super competent doctor. She always had a warm smile and treated patients with the utmost respect. Her patients love her! I often smile when I hear her laughing and joking with parents and children in the exam room.
Unfortunately in 2012 my partner of almost 25 years, Bill Barrows, was diagnosed with cancer and had to step away. Fortunately for us, Dr Katie McCabe joined our office in 2012, another standout resident from RUSH. Katie brought a joyful, vibrant, and energetic feel to the office. She was able to create a special relationship with her patients. After 11 years with this incredible team of three, Dr McCabe left at the end of 2023 to spend more time with her family.
Over the years, I was privileged to work with some incredible staff - the backbone, the core of what really made our practice special: Rigmor Bruno, Sandy Rochford, Izella Mosley, Stacey Lavely, Fidelia Espinoza, Sarai Trevino, Melissa Rodriguez (our consistent 7 person all-star crew) our nurse practitioners Amanda Damon CPNP and Lauren Warn APN, and more recently Bryanna Nunn, Lupe Hernandez, and Katie Soenksen. I want to give a special shout out to Izella who joined our office three months after I started. She has been with me basically my whole time at Streeterville and has been my “rock”. I would not be the doctor I am today without learning from and working together with these amazing people every step of the way.
I’ve also had the honor to interact with some incredible doctors and staff at Prentice and Lurie Childrens. These folks have all been an important part of my life and I look forward to continue to work with them.
Perhaps the most rewarding experiences I’ve had during my career has been getting to know and work with so many wonderful parents and patients, many of which are now parents themselves! I’ve always enjoyed coming into the office and talking with children and their proud parents. Watching children grow - from our very first newborn visits, well child check ups, to heading off to college - have been some of the greatest joys of my professional life. Because of these special relationships, I get a chance to laugh so many times during the day. I am sincerely grateful for being a part of your life, and the trust and partnership you’ve placed in me. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. I’ll carry these memories forever.
As things at Streeterville Pediatrics wind down, I was offered a wonderful opportunity to continue to practice with my friends and colleagues at NWCP. This transition will allow me to continue to practice and have a little more personal time. I’ll be working the same amount of time that I currently spend at the Streeterville Pediatrics office, so I’m not slowing down. I’ve chosen to work with NWCP as I have known these physicians for many years and believe that we have similar values and ideas. Pediatrics is all about working with families to enable them to put their children in the best position to have a healthy and happy life, and I know the team at NWCP will allow me to continue this patient-first approach to medicine. Although its going to be hard to leave Streeterville Pediatrics (the only practice I’ve known), I am excited about this new opportunity and look forward to continuing to support your child's health in this new setting.
Hopefully this will be seamless for you, except for coming to a “new location” and using a new phone number. Your records are on the EPIC electronic medical record system which is also used at NWCP, so all records easily transfer, MyChart will still be the same, and we participate in the same insurance plans (but call to make sure). We will try to make things flow as easily as possible.
Some things to know about the NWCP office:
You can reach me through the new phone number at NWCP 312/642-5515 and through your child’s MyChart
There are extended hours, open from 8AM until 6PM - so more evening hours and ability to get in earlier before work for busy parents, still open on Saturdays (closed Sundays)
Walk In hours are available for sick children to be seen that day (no appointment needed)
Parking - there is parking within the 680 Building (located at the northeast corner). And if you’re lucky, there is on street parking.
For more info, check out their website: NWCPPediatrics.com
If for whatever reasons you feel you need to transition out, please let us know at Streeterville Pediatrics or at NWCP and we can arrange to have your child’s medical records transferred to a new physician. Please see the note from Dr Starr on our website to follow her future plans. It’s been my pleasure and privilege to work with such an outstanding doctor for the past 25 years!
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your family’s healthcare journey. I look forward to maintaining our special relationship and seeing you at my new practice.
Warm regards,
Donald Brown, MD.
